Saraakallio Rock Paintings – Laukaa
15 km from Jyväskylä
A short 15 km journey from Jyväskylä leads us to the Rock Paintings of Saraakallio, in Laukaa. These are the most extensive prehistoric paintings found in the region of Fennoscandia and date back to almost 7.000 years ago.
Their location in a 15-meter steep cliff makes the paintings only visible from the water, making it an ideal canoe route destination for those who appreciate both archaeology and scenic landscapes.

Painting images and materials
It is believed that the more than 100 individual paintings were made using red ochre, a natural pigment derived from iron-rich clay, mixed with blood or animal fat. The paintings depict various images, including humans, animals, and abstract shapes. While natural erosion and exposure to the elements have caused some to fade over time, many remain visible, offering valuable insights into the lives and beliefs of early societies.
Lake Saraavesi and it’s landscape
Lake Saraavesi enhances the area’s natural beauty, with its calm waters reflecting the surrounding forests and cliffs, adding to the site's serene and timeless atmosphere. Today, the combination of rich history, rugged landscapes, and peaceful waters makes Saraakallio a unique destination where visitors can experience both cultural heritage and Finland’s pristine wilderness.
