Park’s Emblem, Wildlife and Berries

The emblem of the Leivonmäki National Park portrays a European Nightjar, this migratory bird arrives to Leivonmäki around the months of May and June after a long journey from the African Savannas. These birds find comfort in nesting in Leivonmäki National Park as the pattern in their feathers mimic the topography of the park, rocky terrains and dry pine forests. During the early summer nights, it’s mating call becomes recognisable as a long and constant whirring sound which can only be heard at night. In its migratory nature, during the months of August and September as the autumn begins, the Nightjar returns to warmer grounds.

Many berries can be found in the park such as cloudberry, cranberry and bilberry all of which are safe to eat and allowed to be picked according to the Everyman’s rights.
