Canoeing on Sotajoki and Ivalojoki - A Gold Rush History
Sotajoki and Ivalojoki are two rivers full of history and natural beauty. Sotajoki was an important site during the Lapland gold rush in the late 1800s, when people searched for gold in harsh conditions. Today, visitors can hike and canoe through the area, enjoying the peaceful rivers and rugged landscapes. The rivers flow through thick forests and rocky areas, making them great for nature lovers.
The forests have tall pine and birch trees, along with smaller Arctic plants like dwarf birch and reindeer moss. Many animals live here, including reindeer, foxes, and wolverines. Birdwatchers may see golden eagles flying high or Siberian jays in the trees. Along the riverbanks, moose sometimes wade in the water, and otters play in the streams.

Canoeing in Lemmenjoki National Park
Lemmenjoki National Park is the largest national park in Finland and a great place to explore nature. The Lemmenjoki River runs through it, offering a beautiful route for canoeing. The park is remote, with deep forests, gentle hills, and a strong connection to the local Sámi culture. Reindeer herding is still practiced in the area, allowing visitors to see traditional Lapland life. In autumn, the forests turn bright colors, while in summer, the sun shines all day and night.
The National Park’s emblem animal is a wolverine. But Lemmenjoki is home to many more wild animals, including Arctic fox and European otter. The taiga forests are full of edible berries like bilberries, lingonberries, and cloudberries, which feed animals and people. The fish population includes, for example, salmon, trout, northern pike or burbot. In the summer, black-throated divers can be heard across the lakes.
Canoeing in Lemmenjoki is one of the best ways to see this wild and peaceful place. The waterways in Lemmenjoki National Park offer various options from which we can choose to suit your needs best.
