Isojärvi National Park

90km from Jyväskylä

A 90 km drive southwest from Jyväskylä takes you to Isojärvi National Park, a wild and beautiful area with clear lakes, deep valleys, and old forests.

Over time, nature has shaped this park into a peaceful place where visitors can enjoy cliffs, green forests, and calm waters.

The park's symbol is the American beaver, a species brought to Finland in the 20th century. These beavers have adapted well and changed the park’s waterways by building lodges and dams.

Canoeing Through Isojärvi National Park

Lake Isojärvi is the main highlight of the canoe tours. It stretches 20 km and winds through scenic shorelines, small islands, and quiet bays. The lake’s surface reflects the tall pine forests and rocky hills, creating a perfect setting for paddlers of all experience levels.

As you paddle along, you may see signs of beavers at work—freshly chewed tree trunks and carefully built dams that create small ponds along the shore.

Rich Wildlife, Edible Berries and Historical Cabins

Isojärvi National Park is rich in plant and animal life. The forests are home to tall pine, spruce, and birch trees, providing shelter for moose, foxes, and the rare lynx. The beaver is an important resident in the Lake Isojärvi National Park area. It is a shy animal, which makes it hard to spot. Visitors who are not in a hurry may often hear their tails slapping, while visitors who are more hurried may see their built dams and flooded paths.

Birdwatchers may spot black-throated divers, woodpeckers, and ospreys flying over the lakes. The park is also full of edible berries, like bilberries, lingonberries, and cloudberries, which visitors can pick along the trails.

Two historical cabins were built in this area in the 1940s and 1950s - Heretty Cabin and Huhtala Croft. Both places offer a great chance to learn more about local history and culture.

We recommend wearing waterproof footwear on this trip, or to bring a change of shoes for wading.
